Palos Verdes Estates Police Chief John Eberhard retired Oct. 31, exactly one year to the month after assuming the $158,832 a year post.

Eberhard, 56, was a 28-year department veteran making $123,552 as a captain when he succeeded Dan Dreiling as head of the small police force, which has about 25 sworn officers. The city plans to hire an interim chief until a permanent replacement for Eberhard is hired, City Manager Tony Dahlerbruch said.

“His retirement will leave a legacy of community policing that will be hard to replace,” Dahlerbruch said.

Eberhard was instrumental in developing and leading PVE-CARES, a community program designed to assist seniors and dependent adults in leading independent lives in their own homes.

Founded in 2005, it now has 736 participants and 21 volunteers.

Eberhard, who grew up on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, began work with the city as a lifeguard and swim teacher in 1980 and joined the Police Department four years later as a jailer.
